A tool for the data hungry court reporter

This is an ongoing data project tying local court appearance data with outcomes and suburbs. I began working on the tool while reporting regularly on NSW court cases from 2014, often wondering how the story fit into the broader context of crime and justice in the state. It is designed to be tool to easily check rates of crime by suburb, age and the length of sentence.

Ashley Madison

The hack of infidelity dating site Ashley Madison left hundreds of thousands of people’s personal information exposed on the dark web. Then National Defence Reporter Karlis Salna and I parsed the large dump of data for government emails which revealed a possible threat to Australia’s national security through potential blackmail and identity theft.

Vaccination Rates

As part of AAP’s national coverage of health data I analysed early childhood vaccination rates released by the federal health department. I combined the data with geolocated postcodes information to better analyse what areas were falling through gaps and also to build the above interactive.
